Hi guys! Finally i found some time to blog! And tomorrow will be my birthday!
Celebrating with the people in China!
Cause it's their National Day!
Ha! And i have one whole week of break!
So cool! No work!
Finally i can rest my lazy bum till late noon, then burn fats in the gym at night, with my own time...
Cause next week we will start our supervisory post... so we don't have to make beds (I HOPE!)
Well.. some parts in this blog will be quite repeated..
Ha.

Personal thoughts
Personally, I felt that doing my attachment in Beijing is a test of adaptability, flexibility and endurance.

My first two days spent in Beijing is one of the most significant events that happened in my life. I believed the 23 students who came here shared the same sentiments. Though the students who left for Su Zhou and San Ya will enjoy better facilities, I believed the selected eight are left here to test our capabilities to live and learn independently in an environment that we never expect.

Adapting
I am sure that most girls mentioned the showering incident in their journals because never would we expect ourselves to see each other naked.

Till today, the girls in Beijing are still trying very hard to become accustomed seeing many other naked females (young to old) walking around comfortably in the locker room.
It felt even more awkward when we saw our mentor or colleagues nude because we see them often.
We have a choice - take a shower later. Be flexible.

There are many other differences and hurdles that we need to accept and live with it. Such as eating meals with only chopsticks, using the olden type of squatted toilet bowls (and holding my breath as long as possible because the stench in the cubicle made me feel nausea).

Problems such as communication breakdown do occur. My mentor spoke Mandarin with a strong dialect accent from her hometown. Sometimes, I could not understand what she meant and that got her really frustrated. However I am glad that she is patient and understanding enough to know that I really cannot comprehend what she meant. Moreover I am a trainee from Singapore with no experience in housekeeping and I do not understand their jargons. Nonetheless, this gave me a chance to learn and gain experience in the operational leve, hence building a strong foundation before we get to the supervisory post next week. (No more making of beds! Yippie!)

Housekeeping
Being attached to the housekeeping department, allows me to understand what I learnt in school better by working and experiencing it.

An example would be the work flow that started even before the guest checks into the hotel.
My mentor and I rushed to turnover the dirty room.
Almost immediately, the bell-boy comes up to deliver the guest's luggage.
The next day we have to clean up the rooms by changing the linens and washing the toilet all within 30 minutes.
When the guest(s) departs, we have to turnover the room as fast as possible so that the new guest(s) can enter.

At this moment, I am fully aware that it took many people and great effort to provide a seamless operation so that guests can feel the comfort of their rooms within the shortest period of time. Co-operation between the frontline and back-of-house staff is extremely important so as to achieve optimal effectiveness and efficiency.

Out-door Catering
When the F&B director asked if anyone is interested going for out-door catering, being enthusiastic, I raised my hand immediately. This gave us an opportunity to experience outdoor catering. (Finally I can get out of the routine and tedious housekeeping duties!)

I feel that we will learn better when we have hands-on training because service not only comes from knowledge learnt but from experiences and most importantly,
Attitude and Passion.

Conclusion

I will not deny the fact that I still complain occasionally but I will not allow my emotion to get the better of me.
I kept reminding myself that I am here to learn for only be 4.5 months.
Whatever culture shock we faced, all we need is some time to adapt and accept.
Whatever mistakes we made, we have to learn and never repeat it again.
Whatever hurdles we encountered, treat it as an experience.
Whenever I felt that I'm complaining too much, I kept repeating to myself, "If the people in China can do it, so can I."

In conclusion, I've learnt not to expect too much and be contented that at least our physiological and safety needs are met so we should not ask for more.
Perhaps we are spoilt by our parents who gave us all the comfort that we need thus we felt upset when we received something that is not what we have expected.
Currently, having the thought of owning the latest mobile phone seemed to be our last priority. I guessed staying here had made us more humble and easily contented.

Warning: I POSTING THIS FROM THE staff corner SO THERE MAY BE SOME FORMATING PROBLEM..

MOST OF THE " ... "
became " ? "

Finally i am having my day off since arrival. So now i have some time to type.Ok... let me go into details what really happened these days...If it's too long, you can break into days to read too.. ha..Course this post is also typed in a 2 different days. But of course, those super detailed thoughts will be inside my travel journal..and not all photos will be loaded... if not, i think i'll take 10 years to complete one post. Moreover, many things are confidential.Come to my house and i'll show u k. (Of course, only my friends are invited. No strangers.)
Before i start, i wanna say i really miss all of you.

Ha. But i'm glad i'm still with my friends.. and we had lots of fun. (but not all the time)But all of us are getting sick... Sad.
All of us have sore throat.. The environment here is really dusty and polluted. When you walk in the streets... you'll feel that you're breathing in exhaust fumes from cars and buses constantly. And when you cross the roads, you're running for you dear life.Zebra or perdastrain crossing are useless. Ha..Cars kept horning like nobody's business. When you thought you're near the path, there's lots of bicycles ringing..Never ending.

The girl beside me, is Michelle.. Our best friend here.. She's really very nice...

Day 1:
Well... Those going to SanYa and SuChou had to bunk in with us.Yes. So, there's 20 girls in a room! There's nothing much inside, no tables and chairs, only beds and lockers. No toilets, gotta walk to the end of our hostel. All squatting toilet bowls.. (What you'll see in Singapore.)
No bathroom, gotta walk down the carpark to the next block. We are not allowed to use the electrical plug. So mobile phones will be charged by our "Nanny",she's like our mother here... Everyone called her "Ah yee". We all love her!But we are not allowed to lock our door because there are so many people stay staying in the room. And the next reason, she will come check on us everynight at 11pm, to make sure all of us obeyed our curfew.Ok, so all of us went to the bathroom area at night.WAH~! Culture shock.
Major surprise. All the girls walked around naked!Oh gosh. We have to accept that and "blend" in. But of course, we're not used to it, so either we wear our undergarments into the shower-room,or wrap ourselves with towel before entering.
It really felt awkward, imagine you know your best friends for more than 2 years, then one day, all of us have to see each other naked.Damn weird. But we have no choice. We're here. We have to bathe. We faced the wall while bathing... unlike others. and everyone knows we're the trainees from Singapore, cos we're shy.
I prayed to God. To give me the strength to accept all these. Because i'm not sure if i can survive this for the next 5 months.

Day 2:
Went to the stuff canteen for breakfast.SHOCK again. The staff only uses chopsticks! No spoons! I'm glad that i know how to use them... but it's really hard to scoop rice. And we don't eat from bowls but metal plates, cos we drink water from bowls. However, God answered my prayers. I kept a positive mindset, and treat everything here as a unique experience that I'LL never encounter in Singapore.I started to feel everything here is interesting. (Though i still complain a lot. But i'm not the only one! Haha.) During our boring lecture break, i went to the toilet.Eye-opener!One tiny toilet (that stinks like hell) with a squatting toilet bowl you'll never get to see in S'pore. The hole is so deep... there'S no water inside the hole.. so it'S accumulated urine and shits.GOD...When i went back to the training classroom, i felt that the smell of the toilet still lingers in my clothes..Gosh... I'm not sure if my imagination is running wild, or it's really true..
Went to the bathroom toilet at night. TIME TO BATHE~Once we reached our locker, we just started stripping (of cos not naked).
It's like we've accepted it and it's just natural to do so.

Day 3:
Most of our lecture notes are written in Mandarin...And when we work, we have to read and write them!GOSH. Haven't touch them ever since i handed in my O'levels paper...And when we speak, we spoke in their language.Yes. What we Singaporean speak, they can't really understand. We spoke too fast without pronouncing each word clearly.I won't deny that we might bring the accent back, cause we have to speak to them that way.I gotta find time to study? How to read and write. Arg...

Day 4:
Thought exams and tests are all over since we are on attachment now?But no?I had a test today? All in Mandarin.Fortunately, MCQ question?but the problem is?I can'T read many words! I don'T even understand the question..Goodness.. Hope I don'T fail that paper.Went out to Carrefour.. (finally a departmental store that we know) to get our daily necessities..

OUR TRAINING UNIFORM.

Day 5:
Sad?13 of our friends are flying off to their respective city?Left the 8 of us in Beijing.7 girls and 1 guy?And we are told that we are to separate.. No longer the 7 of us chatting and sleeping together. But at least they give us the choice to choose who we can sleep with. So, as usual my clique of 4 ?ShuFen, Colleen, Linda and Me will sleep together. And Nerine, Peixuan and HuiYing will sleep in another room..Hmmm.. wonder how will our new roommates welcome us. What are their feelings?Fortunately, we know 2 girls in the new room.. hmm?Went to check my exam results?Whew! Passed all subjects?Bloody hell? Finally got my very first Distinction in my entire Poly life.. But too bad.. GPA still not high enough to get into UNI.Cause I only thought about entering uni when I get to year 3?too late rite?Stupid me?Went out for dinner in a restaurant?Crystal Jade standard!Yummy! Really filling and we paid only 27 Yuan each?
Bout $5 when converted into Singapore Dollar! WHOO HOO!But we realized, we spent a lot here because we keep on thinking that It's cheap, its cheap...
Damn..Went to our bathing area?ha! Yes. I'LL still talking about it?cause I still can'T get over it..But now we felt more comfortable naked with each other.. I already start walking from my locker to the shower area bottomless...
ha.. cos it'S not as obvious as exposing our top? It'S like super clear view of your chest? Can'T imagine ppl looking at me nude. LOL.Stupid water tap?Not adjusted in time! Freaking hot!I think part of my flesh is cooked?Want to eat?Damn it.

Day 6:
My off day! Finally?Freaking lack of sleep these days?Did nothing much today. Want to rest today? We went 3 different places to eat, first a full meal of catfish in boiling chili oil and yummy porridge.. Our friend, Jacky from HR dept brought us there. Then we went to eat Big Prawn/Small lobster?err.. I don'T know what'S that.It just looked like lobster?but the size of a big prawn.. also in chili oil..Then we saw a fruit cafE the girls whine to go in!Ha! Cause garry and jacky don'T want to go in.. so the girls started whining outside the caf?. haha..So stupid.. the guys gave up and entered!YUMMY!!! Finally we had lots of fibers to prevent constipation that almost all of us have when we just reached.. hahaha..Tmr going Zoo?Can'T wait for it.. Wonder how it'LL be?

Day 7:
The zoo trip is fine?Normal like our zoo.. but of course, MUCH bigger..But it'S located right in the middle of shopping centres and streets?yuP, not in places with lots of trees and stuff..(Significant stuff that happened today will be in my travel journal.)All I can say is, being together with your friends for 24 hours, friction bound to happen.Conflicts is evitable, especially when everybody'S perceptions towards something are different.

Day 8:

Garry said we looked like from Maid agency.. ha..
My first day working the Housekeeping department.Ha! I can skip going to the gym for the next 2 weeks?Bed is freaking heavy. And you need skills to fling the bed linens and make sure it lays straight. The blanket is heavy and thick?so u can imagine me helping my mentor to prepare 14 rooms per day?Went to give English lessons for the staff in the Housekeeping department?7pm to 8pm?but dragged till 8.35pm?They called us LAO SHI(Teacher)But in the day, we called our Mentor, SHI FU...

Day 9:
Routine...Change bedsheets?Clean toilet?Yes, scrub sink and bathtub.. and toilet bowls.Today English lesson started at 6.30pm, cause the manager said, more people will be able to attend?but still dragged till 8.30pm?Goodness.. Even less personal time..We were thinking should be suggest that we have it on alternate days instead of Monday to Friday?seriously?all of us here do not have enough sleep every single day?except on our off days? We're here in our new dorm.28 ppl in a room.. with me, shufen, colleen and Linda?Nerine, peixuan and huiying in another room.We are separated. Had a meeting.Hmm?shall not disclose too much.Organisation stuff is confidential.

i took a pic secretly.. hmm.....

Day 10:
Routine. Nth much.Except that we moved back into our previous room.Everyone is happy.Honestly, I feel that this organization treat us very well.

Day 11:
Thursday and Friday is my off day! Finally i can get my sleep. But since all my friends are working today,i woke up hearing their alarm clocks.. 7am! Arg?went to have breakfast with them?then went to have breakfast with them?came back to dorm alone and slept from 9am till 1pm?Now I can get all the personal time and space to rest peacefully? To do my own stuff like reading?Lying on the bed, listening to music.Doing nothing at all?The feeling is great!

31 Aug - Just some post telling that i miss u guys. Nth much.

2&3 Sept - Erm... Some sad posts that's no longer significant i guess.
You can skip reading it. (I've moved on after a few days.. I've learnt my lesson well not to dwell on certain stuff..)

3 Sept (evening) - My Relatives are here~

Gina's 8th birthday. Now she's 12! Time files!

4 Sept- Sentosa! Ice cube cafe and Chomp chomp!
Started getting most of my mood back!
(Joo.. I left a message for u.)

5 Sept
- MET MY LITTLE MISS TINGY! My mood is ALL back!
(Ting.. I added a message for u too. And a SURPRISE from Year 1999!)

Some ppl went MSN, clicked on me and said i looked spastic here.
Thanks~! The more spastic it is, the more i'll love it!
So i don't care.
Instead, Ting said i looked natural here.
Lol. Shit. Does that mean i'm natually spastic?

I wonder how life would be, if i continued to be the shortest and lightest girl in school.. Ha..

Why must i put on so much weight and height now?!

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Click on the pic to enlarge!)
Look at the third row both corners! Both of us are the shortest girls! I was shock when i see it. No wonder now we're best friends!

Anyway, Thanks Hui Ying who kept offering to send me off.
No need.... Really.. What can we do?

I'll come back alive!

And for the rest who also offered... Thanks!! But no thanks!!
It's Appreciated!!!
----------------------------------
Now in China, i can't use progammes to edit my pics like resize or remove those freaking ugly pimples. HAHA! DAMN. I just exposed my secrets.
(I didn't edit my pics at all for the last 3 posts.. no time.. my mum nagging at me to pack my stuff.. hai.. looked uglier-than-usual inside! ha.)
Mr. Lee was saying there might be reporters in China. Better not. Not as if we're going Disney Land. (So cool.. I really envy those going.)
Imagine one accidentally took me without smiling... plus they won't be so free to help me edit to remove ugly pimples.
I'll look like SHIT. Seriously.
(That's why i say photos are deceiving.)

Me and Ting took a pic without smiling that day.
Our natural self.
Oh my God.
At first we don't even dare to view the display.
When we saw it, WE LAUGHED LIKE MAD.
OH GOSH.
We were saying we seriously should smile non-stop.
But i said we can't do that.. If not, in the long run, we'll look ugly too.
Cos there'll be huge muscles on our faces..
EEEw.. then we started imagining lots of funny stuff that our face can do.
Damn stupid and hilarious.

Hmmm.... Thanks to everyone who made my last week in Singapore really GREAT!
5 months will fly pass like nobody's business!
So! I'll be back!

In case i do not come back.
Here's my last will:
HAHA! I'm serious.
1. Donate all my organs. (Priorities for children k) - Pls force my mum to do it in case she don't want to sign it.
I don't want useful organs that can save a life to be burnt into ashes or eaten by maggots.
Talking 'bout maggots....
2. I want to be cremated not buried! Singapore need more land i think. Oh yes! Christain funeral pls.
3. If need to play music. Play "Close to you" by carpenters. Love that oldies man.

Ok ok. I don't wanna scared u guys.
Hahaha... Shu Fen and Colleen used to say similar scary stuff too.
I'm not cursing myself.
It's always good to prepare.
Better be safe than sorry.

Well, God will bless me and i'll have fun in this trip!

(To someone... since i don't know where this last message should be..
Hmm... wanted to contact u more.. but as u know, i promised myself not to take too much initiative..
Don't know if i've done the right thing.. but for once, i'll choose to think i'm right..
hmmm. doubt u'll read this. or maybe u do? i don't know.. guess everything will really end from here.
Anyway, nothing started. .
What am i talking about? Ha~
)

Goodbye my friends!!!

* * * * *

Final shopping!
Bought all necessity for China with my darling SIS in Toa Payoh!

Yes yes yes.
I know i'm ugly.

I kept telling my daddy to cut his hair.
He's so lazy. Arg!

Met my secondary sch boys, Loy Jun, Suan Yang and Wandi.
Went J8 Coffee bean in the end, dragged to go Bugis with them..
So i'm wearing my so called 'house-clothes' there. Gosh.
Oh~ I went Bishan Library...!
Honestly, it looked like Science Centre...
Many stuff for ppl to experiment...
Weird...

Me and Suan Yang.
The BLUR SOTONG!
Ha~ A nice guy!

Me and Wandi-the-gentlemen.
Ha! He looked cute here rite??!

(Anyway, thanks for carrying my stuff the whole day and always offering to help in every ways.)
*Appreciated.

My body guards!
Ha!
*Don't kill me*

Mr. Loy~ (Love to call him since sec sch.)
THE MEANO!
(Never judge a book by its cover)

Always say evil stuff... Ha! But so damn hilarious~
He's making me evil as well, cause i can't help but laugh at all the bad things he say!
His actions and facial expressions when he speak!
So exaggerated!
OH GOSH.
FREAKING FUNNY!

As usual, i love going to arcade to watch ppl play.
Yes. Watch.
Cause i always lose when i play with guys...
I'll die within minutes!
(Tried with Miguel. I know. LOL.)
So i rather not play!

*Ting! I realised we never go arcade for a hell long time! We should when i'm back!

Went to some double-storey coffee shop,
opposite MOS burger.

Ha! Suan Yang looked funny..
Jumping up the stairs.

Loy ordered soya bean drink..
That's a brand that i've never seen before.
Ha.

Happen to meet Mikio on our way out from the arcade and he joined us for dinner.

Well... The day ended really well...
Enjoyed myself very much!

But my brain is seriously polluted with the 'Fu*k' word~
LOL. I don't use it unless i'm really angry..

But they use it like it's part of singlish - 'leh', 'lor' or 'la'.
E.g.
"Wah Lao~ I'm fu*cking hungry now~"
"Haha! Fu*cking funny!"
"Don't leh. Fu*cking stupid."

HAHAHA! Goodness.

I won't deny i use singlish when i speak.
So what. I'm singaporean. I speak Singlish.
That makes me Uniquely Singaporean.
(Ha. Self-consolation.)
Ignore me~ (Pls don't! I'm kiddin!)

Wandi: Hey boy.. Really thanks a lot for everything! E.g Always helping me to carry my stuff... Even offered to treat me... We MUST go Ben&Jerry next time!!! Take care ok!
Hope you'll meet someone like Miss D~!! HAHAHA!

Suan Yang: HELLO!!! Hey.. going NS soon! I shall see a man when you're back! Continue to be a good teacher (so cool. i also want to be teacher!) and start preparing for NS. Haha! Take care!
